The bottom line…
Self-agency. The ability to take control of one’s own life and make decisions aligned with values and goals. This is fundamental to achieving excellence, wellbeing and high performance. It is the connection between yielding and striving that defines the 'human first' approach.
Science, Practice, and Wisdom
Self-agency is often misunderstood as mere autonomy or independence. Instead, it is about aligning your actions with your core values and goals, embracing the interplay between striving (performance) and well-being. This connection is at the heart of my coaching framework across vitality, performance mastery and success programs.
Research supports that self-agency contributes significantly to resilience, motivation and sustained high performance. Studies have shown that individuals with a strong sense of agency are better equipped to navigate stress, adapt to challenges and maintain clarity in decision-making. We call this fortitude. A precursor for resilience.
Practically, cultivating self-agency involves:
Setting intentional goals: Defining what success looks like for you, not just externally, but internally.
Taking consistent action: Bridging the gap between intention and action, supported by feedback and reflection.
Building fortitude: Taking on challenges, embracing setbacks as learning opportunities. Fail fast and move on.
